  A U.S. nuclear submarine sinks to the ocean's bottom after being run into by a Norwegian freighter. The submarine's Captain Paul Blanchard (Charlton Heston) radios for help, and Captain Bennett (Stacy Keach) coordinates the rescue effort. The rescue begins, and retired Navy Captain Gates (David Carradine) and Mickey (Ned Beatty) descend to the submarine in a two-man, deep-submergence rescue vehicle in a daring attempt to save the crew.
