Oedipus Rex 1957 N/R, 87 min. Genre: Drama
Director: Tyrone Guthrie Cast: Douglas(2) Campbell, Douglas Rain, Eric House, Robert Goodier, Donald Davis, Eleanor Stuart, Tony van Bridge, William Hutt, Gertrude Tyas, Naomi Cameron
Stratford Ontario Festival Players provide the cast for this fine stage play, but once again the transformation from stage to celluloid just doesn't work well. Douglas Campbell excels in the role of Oedipus, the man fated to kill his father and marry his mother. Douglas Rain (the messenger) went on to become the voice of HAL in "2001: A Space Odyssey."

The Shape of Things to Come 1979 PG, 95 min. Genre: Sci-Fi
Director: George McCowan Cast: Jack Palance, Carol Lynley, John Ireland, Barry Morse, Nicholas Campbell, Anne-Marie Martin, Greg Swanson, Mark Parr, William Hutt, Ardon Bess
This remake of the 1936 film, "Things to Come," lacks the quality of the original. Based on H.G. Wells' book, the storyline revolves around the aftermath of a nuclear war as survivors battle inhabitants of the Moon. Probably not even interesting to sci-fi lovers.

The Statement 2003 R, 120 min. Genre: Drama
Director: Norman Jewison Cast: Michael Caine, Tilda Swinton, Jeremy Northam, Alan Bates, Charlotte Rampling, Ciaran Hinds, John Neville, Matt Craven, Edward Petherbridge, Frank Finlay, David de Keyser, William Hutt
In this less-than-brilliant film based on Brian Moore's 1996 novel, a former Nazi executioner, Pierre Brossard (Michael Caine), has been living out his life in Southern France where he is protected by the Catholic Church. But now he becomes the target of assassins as well as the law and must turn to his wartime cohorts for help in this next challenge of his life as a fugitive.
