His son, Captain Merritt, kills him in order to save the mission, and the crew lands on Mars on Christmas day. Special effects are great.

In the aftermath, the Major is tried for treason and sentenced to death. Sitting Bull (J. Carrol Naish), Chief of the Sioux Indians, appeals to President Grant to pardon Major Parrish. The President, knowing the Major from the Civil War, grants the pardon.
