Agnes and Peter have sex, and then the bugs arrive. They are coming out of Peter's body, and he is convinced that they are infecting Agnes as well. Paranoia sets in as both Agnes and Peter descend into a state of madness using any means at their disposal to rid themselves of the bugs.

This film won the Best Picture Academy Award, and Gene Hackman and William Friedkin were also honored for Best Actor and Director. Awards were also given for Best Writing and Editing, and nominations were received for Best Supporting Actor (Roy Scheider) and Sound.
