  The horrors of war along the Western Front during World War I are experienced by a group of young German soldiers and are told in this powerful story about the futility of war. Paul Bauman (Lew Ayres) and his classmates arrive on the front lines ready for battle. Their sergeant, Katczinsky (Louis Wolheim), briefs them on how to survive, but that night one of them is shot, and they learn that they are low on supplies and food. Now, they face days and nights fighting from the trenches and realize that fighting for their country is not what they had once believed it would be. The film won Academy Awards for Best Picture and Director.

When this is discovered by Sharon's older sister, Judge Margaret Turner (Myrna Loy), she threatens Dick with jail if he does not agree to date Sharon for one week to help Sharon get over her infatuation with him. Dick agrees to take Sharon out, but as the week progresses, it is he and Margaret who discover mutual interests in each other.

He then quits his job, and the dead man's widow (Teresa Wright) hires him to work on her ranch. They fall in love and marry, but Vanner still has a guilty conscience and sets out to confront the killer. The confrontation does not go well, which leads to Vanner seeking refuge with the priest.
