During a drought in their farming community, Julia (Alison Pill) and her brother Daniel (Bill Switzer) meet paleontologist Jack McCabe (Simon MacCorkindale) who suspects that there are valuable dinosaur fossils nearby. A reward is offered, and Julia and Daniel–after tutoring by McCabe–begin to search for the remains. Just as they get close to the needed evidence, "Hump" Hinton (Christopher Plummer) arrives on the scene ready to use any means available to get the bone samples for his own use.

Following her heroin-addicted mother's (Jennifer Tilly) death, city-girl Jeliza-Rose (Jodelle Ferland) begins a new life with her father, Noah (Jeff Bridges), at her deceased grandmother's home in the country. But Noah also is a junkie, and soon after the move he overdoses and dies. Now Jeliza-Rose is left in a house with her father's decaying body, and she starts communicating with her four Barbie dolls' heads and her young, mentally challenged neighbor Dickens (Brendan Fletcher). They are watched over by Dickens' sister Dell (Janet McTeer), a veiled taxidermist with her own plans for Noah's carcass.
