Down-but-not-quite-out loser Bernie Lootz (William H. Macy) works as a "cooler" (his bad luck rubs off on would-be winners) for manager Shelly Kaplow's (Alec Baldwin) Las Vegas casino. The ploy works–until Bernie falls in love with a cocktail waitress (Maria Bello), and his run of bad luck changes into good. The ensuing turn of events does not bode well with Shelly. Alec Baldwin was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar.

While working for the Mob, Joey Gazelle's (Paul Walker) job is to get rid of guns used in murders, and he has been stowing the guns in his basement. This sets off a string of events because Joey realizes that the gun can be traced as the one used in the killing of police officers, and now he could be targeted by both police and the Mob.
