Set amidst the bombings of London during World War II, this is the love story of ballerina Myra (Vivien Leigh) and soldier Roy Cronin (Robert Taylor). They fall in love instantly and make plans to marry. When Roy leaves for the battlefront, Myra misses a dance recital in order to bid him farewell and loses her job. Soon, the newspaper reports that Roy has been killed, and Myra turns to prostitution to support herself. Roy wasn't killed, but when he returns to Myra a tragic end to their romance lies ahead.

During World War I, while taking cover under Waterloo Bridge during an air raid in London, chorus girl Myra (Mae Clarke) meets Canadian soldier Roy Cronin (Douglass Montgomery). Not realizing that Myra is a prostitute, Roy falls in love with her, and they make plans to be married–despite Myra's concerns about not admitting to Roy that she is a prostitute. Roy does find out about her past but still loves Myra. It is time for Roy to return to the battlefield, and they share a tearful farewell at Waterloo Bridge. Later, during another air raid, Myra is again near Waterloo Bridge but doesn't take cover and is killed.
