Queeg's testimony and downfall as he rolls ball bearings in his fist is a classic scene. The film received several Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Actor (Bogart), and Supporting Actor (Tom Tully).

The submarine leaves San Francisco on Christmas Eve, and the voyage will prove harrowing as the crew sets out to fulfill its mission. This film was released during World War II, and, while propaganda is obvious, it is still an exciting story.

Paul does appear to bail her out, and she learns that her father, the king, has died and that she is now the queen. By story's end, Valerie and Paul are a couple, and Jimmy and Leslie have discovered their love for each other.
