  Tommy Lee Jones takes on the role of convicted killer Gary Gilmore who was the first man executed in the USA after the death penalty was reinstated in 1976. The last nine months of Gilmore's life are the basis for this story. Gilmore is 35 years old when he is released from prison for armed robbery. He tries to go straight and fails. After killing two men during separate robberies, Gilmore is sentenced to death in Utah. Jones won the Emmy for his very believable performance as the villainous Gilmore.
