My vote for the best Woody Allen film1fatts 03/26/2007
My vote for the best Woody Allen.
I was captivated from the opening shot: black and white fireworks over the Manhattan skyline, music by Gershwin.
There is the Allen Jewish-New Yorker-Neurosis stuff and the Allen self-deprecating humour, and it is all good. Better than good is Mariel Hemingway: the actress for sure, but not just the actress. The character. The screenplay. There is an unsentimental understanding that Woody Allen the director has of Woody Allen the character (called 'Isaac Davis" in this version, but Woody Allen is Woody Allen). It is a funny piece, but Isaac is self-centered and essentially selfish, and it costs him a lot and may cost him everything. This all revolves around Tracy (Hemingway) which is written bravely out of rhythm with almost everything else and is ultimately the move moving for it.
If you see no other Woody Allen film. . .
