  While trying to discover what makes the criminal mind work, the psychiatrist Dr. Clitterhouse (Edward G. Robinson) cracks a safe while attending a party. He then contacts beautiful Jo Keller (Claire Trevor) who fences stolen gems, she introduces him to gangster "Rocks" Valentine (Humphrey Bogart), and Clitterhouse ends up becoming enthralled with the underworld–all of which will lead to murder. "Rocks" is his victim, and Clitterhouse uses his psychiatric expertise to make the jury members find that he is insane.

Then, Loder is killed, and Jesper travels to Italy where he links up with resistance fighters Pinkie and Gina (Robert Alda and Lilli Palmer). He does meet with Polda and learns about the Nazi plans to build an atomic bomb. Meanwhile, he falls in love with Gina, but now must find a way to escape from the Nazis.

The doctor is able to take care of this little problem–but the consequences may be worse than the original condition. Oskar Homolka is excellent as the creepy servant.

Kitty persuades Cross to embezzle money to pay for her apartment. Meanwhile, what Cross does not know is that Kitty's lover is con man Johnny Prince (Dan Duryea), and he is removing Cross' name from the paintings and replacing them with Kitty's name. Now the art work proves successful, and Johnny claims they are Kitty's and makes money off of them. Cross finally catches on, kills Kitty, and then suffers a mental breakdown. This is a remake of Jean Renoir's classic "La Chienne."

While at school, Andrei falls in love with a Polish noblewoman, Natalia Dubrov (Christine Kaufmann). Tensions between father and son rise as each must decide between loyalty for the Cossacks and love. This story was filmed in England in 1939 as "The Rebel Son." An Academy Award nomination was received for Best Musical Score.
