  Carnival dancer Lane Bellamy (Joan Crawford) is stranded in a small, Florida town where she gets a job as a waitress. She falls in love with Deputy Sheriff Fielding Carlisle (Zachary Scott), but Sheriff Titus Semple (Sidney Greenstreet), who will have none of their romance, frames Lane on a prostitution charge and sends her to jail. Later, after being released from prison, Lane returns to town and seeks revenge against the sheriff–an act that will bring death or destruction to all.
