After their children were killed in a car crash four years ago, Chris and Annie Nielsen's (Robin Williams and Annabella Sciorra) marriage was nearly destroyed. Spiritual guide Albert (Cuba Gooding Jr.) helps Chris move on to the next world of Paradise where he sees his children (Josh Paddock and Jessica Brooks Grant) once again. Meanwhile, Annie's depression over her losses takes over, she commits suicide, and goes to Hell. With help from Albert and another guide, The Tracker (Max von Sydow), Chris ventures into Hell to save Annie from damnation.
