Francine is willing to bargain. If Arvilla will deliver Joe's ashes to her, she will give the house to Arvilla. To settle the matter, Arvilla and her good friends Margene (Kathy Bates) and Carol (Joan Allen) join her on a car trip in Joe's 1966 red Pontiac Bonneville to deliver his ashes to Francine in Santa Barbara. And the adventure begins with many stops along the way–including a flat tire in Utah, hitchhiker Bo (Victor Rasuk) who is looking for the father he never knew, and truck driver Emmett (Tom Skerritt) who treats them to dinner in Las Vegas. The trip turns out to be much more than they expected, and, along the way, the women learn many new things about themselves.

The boys become friends and, together, pursue their dream of becoming Reggaeton stars. To that end, they join with dancer Carol "CC" Reyes (Zulay Henao). "CC" connects them with music producer Jeffrey Skyler (James McCaffrey) who offers them a trip to New York to cut an album. The trip proves to be a failure–until Rob's dad steps in with his friend, superstar Voltio (Julio Ramos), and the boys see hope in fulfilling their dream.

Then there is Carl Ridley (Bill Paxton) hoping his financial advisor, Allen (Stephen Dillane), can help, while Ridley is on the run with his daughter Pippa (Agnes Brucker) and $1 million in tow. Finally, Pippa's escapades with Fritz (Victor Rasuk) become very risky when Fritz, who owes big money to gangster Richie (Razaaq Adoti), may have found Pippa to be the means of getting his hands on needed cash.

When Victor falls in love with Judy (Judy Marte) who, in turn, shows no interest in Victor, he comes up with a plan: get Judy's brother, Carlos (Wilfree Vasquez), to help set him up with Judy and agree to set Carlos up with his own sister, Vickie.

Sarah wants the police to investigate, but fellow Dean Catherine Kenney (Miranda Richardson) and President Winston Garvey (James Rebhorn) are more interested in maintaining the school's reputation than in finding the perpetrator. When Sarah escorts Black reporter Aaron Carmichael (Mykelti Williamson) around campus, they confide in each other about racial prejudice, and Sarah does some serious thinking. Later, Professor Burton Strauss (Beau Bridges) conducts a "Forum on Race," and a riot ensues. Now, Sarah finally must deal with her own prejudices.

But, they do not leave the war behind and have problems settling back into the civilian world. Brandon does not want to return to war and, instead, goes AWOL. With Steve's girlfriend Michelle (Abbie Cornish) at the wheel, Brandon and Michelle set out for Washington, D.C., so that Brandon can make a plea to Senator Orton Worrell (Josef Sommer). Along the way, Brandon makes his choice between duty to country and his own sanity.
