After 20 years of marriage to Joe, he has died, and Arvilla (Jessica Lange) learns that because he never updated his will, Francine (Christine Baranski), who is Joe's daughter from his first marriage, will inherit their Pocatello, Idaho, home. Francine is willing to bargain. If Arvilla will deliver Joe's ashes to her, she will give the house to Arvilla. To settle the matter, Arvilla and her good friends Margene (Kathy Bates) and Carol (Joan Allen) join her on a car trip in Joe's 1966 red Pontiac Bonneville to deliver his ashes to Francine in Santa Barbara. And the adventure begins with many stops along the way–including a flat tire in Utah, hitchhiker Bo (Victor Rasuk) who is looking for the father he never knew, and truck driver Emmett (Tom Skerritt) who treats them to dinner in Las Vegas. The trip turns out to be much more than they expected, and, along the way, the women learn many new things about themselves.
