He makes friends with Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez (Mike Vitar) who teaches him how to play baseball, and Scotty joins Benny's sandlot team that desperately needs its ninth member. Scotty helps himself to his stepfather's "Babe Ruth" autographed baseball and hits it for a home run. The problem is that the ball lands in Mr. Mertle's (James Earl Jones) junkyard, which is guarded by Mertle's snarling dog "The Beast." Now, the fun begins as Scotty and Benny devise ways to get the ball out of the junkyard by building ball-retrieving machines.
