Matters rise to a head at a picnic, and, after a fight with Alan, Hal hops a freight train to escape the law. But, by story's end, Madge is riding a bus in an effort to find her true love Hal. The film received Oscars for Art Direction/Set Decoration and Film Editing and was nominated for Best Picture, and Director. Arthur O'Connell received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Howard Bevans, the rejected, reliable boyfriend of Rosemary.
