This film provides an excellent satire on the art of filmmaking. While filming at the Victorine Studio in Nice, chaos reigns on the set, which is filled with personal dilemmas as well as technical problems. At the center of all the turmoil is the director, Ferrand (Francois Truffaut), who attempts to keep his cast in line at least long enough to complete the project. The cast includes temperamental Alphonse (Jean-Pierre Leaud), emotionally unstable Julie (Jacqueline Bisset), closet homosexual Alexandre (Jean-Pierre Aumont), alcoholic Severine (Valentina Cortese), and pregnant Stacey (Alexandra Stewart)–all of whose problems affect Ferrand's effort to keep the filming on track.
