The plot follows the lives of Barbara Baekeland (Julianne Moore) and her son Tony (Barney Clarke as a child and Eddie Redmayne as an adult). Tony's father, Brooks (Stephen Dillane), thinks that his son is a failure, but over the years Barbara and Tony grow close–in fact, they even become lovers who sleep not only with each other but with bisexual Sam (Hugh Dancy) as well.
