This story begins in East Berlin during the 1980s with dramatist Georg Dreyman (Sebastian Koch) and his companion Christa-Maria Sieland (Martina Gedeck) who don't always agree with the party line. In the mid-80s, East German Secret Police agent Captain Gerd Wiesler (Ulrich Muhe) is assigned to spy on Dreyman and Sieland. In the process of his observations, the hard-nosed Wiesler becomes fascinated with the couple and turns into an anti-establishment figure himself. By story's end it is 1991, and the Berlin Wall has fallen allowing for a reunited Germany. An Oscar was received for Best Foreign Language film.

It appears that Solaris is able to capture dreams and make them a reality. Chris discovers this when he dreams of his late wife, Rheya (Natascha McElhone), and wakes up finding what seems to be Rheya lying next to him. Other strange events follow.
