Duncan Shorter (Joshua Jackson) was a hockey star in high school, but, instead of attending the University of Minnesota, he now spends his time losing one dead-end job after another. His grandfather Ronald (Donald Sutherland) lives with Duncan's grandmother Ruth (Louise Fletcher) in a seniors' complex, and Duncan begins to visit them often. Ronald suffers from Alzheimer's disease, and Rose just tries to keep things together. When Duncan lands a job at his grandparents' apartment complex and meets the building's new assistant superintendent Kate (Juliette Lewis), it looks like his life will change as their amorous relationship grows.
