In this remake of "Alias Boston Blackie" (1942), Boston Blackie (Chester Morris) is involved in a magic act at a women's prison where inmate Dinah Moran (Constance Dowling) uses the act to disappear. Blackie learns that Dinah's ex-husband Lampau (Warren Ashe) is a magician who has changed his name to John Jani, is performing near by, and is planning to marry his assistant Irene (Trudy Marshall). Blackie warns Lampau that Dinah has escaped, hides him, and then masquerades as Lampau. But Lampau is murdered, and Blackie is arrested for the crime. Blackie escapes from prison and uses magic to trick the murderess into admitting that she killed Lampau.
