Short-story writer Hank Chinaski (Matt Dillon) wanders in and out of flophouses, bars, and jobs in Los Angeles. One night, he meets Jan (Lili Taylor) at a bar, and a few days later Hank moves in with her. All goes well for awhile, but when Hank appears to be gaining success in a new job, problems with Jan arise.
