Eleven-year-old Roger (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a foster child of Maggie (Brenda Fricker) who hears his irresponsible father (Dermot Mulroney) claim that the chances of reuniting his family are just as good as the last-place California Angels winning the pennant. Roger wants his family to get back together so that he can move out of his foster home and prays that the Angels will win the pennant. Roger's prayers are answered in the form of angel Al (Christopher Lloyd) who heads up a group of angels (appearing as glowing special effects) that arrive to help the team–much to the amazement of the Angels' manager George Knox (Danny Glover) and the long-suffering owner Hank Murphy (Ben Johnson).

Then, there is a gambler, "Right" (Matt Dillon), who has bloodhounds on his trail when he becomes a murder suspect. Finally, "The Brain" (Rutger Hauer) is bleeding profusely, and his friends search for a way to save his life through a blood transfusion.
