Richard Keenam 02/13/2010
Many believe she should have at least been nominated for an academy award, and even should have won one. As most everyone knows, the academy award is a "most popular" vote. Being a non-smoker and non-drinker, Doris did not socialize with the majority of those in the academy who voted for this award. Perhaps had the rape scene with James Cagney not been cut, which was Day's only real regret of the film, she might have received the nomination. When she left Hollywood, she never went back, even though she was offered roles in future movies. Although the Golden Globe awards recognized her great achievements in 1986, I believe, the academy never has and now never will. There is a radio tribute to her on her on her birthday every year, in which I understand they play her recordings and she joins in with some things to say. I agree with James Cagney when he said she should have gone into more dramatic roles after this movie, which many consider her best performance ever.

Joel McCrea is the fourth actor to play the lead role in this story of the good guy, the Eastern schoolteacher, the friend-gone-bad, and the villain (Brian Donlevy). OK; saved by Donlevy, who always makes a good villain.
