But, on the way to the airport, Ringerman's hippie girlfriend Linny (Tisha Sterling) waylays Coogan, and this allows Ringerman to escape. As most everyone knows, the academy award is a "most popular" vote. Being a non-smoker and non-drinker, Doris did not socialize with the majority of those in the academy who voted for this award. Perhaps had the rape scene with James Cagney not been cut, which was Day's only real regret of the film, she might have received the nomination. When she left Hollywood, she never went back, even though she was offered roles in future movies. Although the Golden Globe awards recognized her great achievements in 1986, I believe, the academy never has and now never will. There is a radio tribute to her on her on her birthday every year, in which I understand they play her recordings and she joins in with some things to say. I agree with James Cagney when he said she should have gone into more dramatic roles after this movie, which many consider her best performance ever. |
