The Florida backwoods home of "The Yearling" author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings (Mary Steenburgen) and her life prior to publishing her first novel are the basis for this story. Rawlings leaves her husband and moves to a Florida orange grove where she begins life anew hoping to find needed peace to write her story. Among her new-found friends are her servant Geechee (Alfre Woodard), her lover Norton (Peter Coyote), and father and daughter Marsh and Ellie Turner (Rip Torn and Dana Hill)–all of whom give her the inspiration to write her novel.
