After her husband walks out, suburban wife Terry (Joan Allen) is left with four daughters to raise. This is not an easy task as is evidenced by Terry's downhill slide from friendly mom to sarcastic shrew. Her attraction to next-door-neighbor, alcoholic Denny Davies (Kevin Costner), contributes to Terry's reliance on booze. But, Denny is basically a good guy and helps keep peace between mother and daughters–some of the time.
