Widowed Lucretia "Lu" Rogers (Debbie Reynolds) leaves her two children in New York and resettles in Charleyville, Arizona Territory, where she takes a job working on Aggie Gate's (Thelma Ritter) ranch. Lu is courted by saloon owner Dan Jones (Steve Forrest) and by rancher Pat Collins (Andy Griffith). Lu adapts well to her new surroundings and is elected sheriff. When Lu is kidnapped, Dan and Pat form a posse and rescue her. After her rescue, Lu marries Dan, gives the sheriff's badge to Pat, and uses the reward money to bring her children to Arizona.
