Adventuresome artist Laura Reynolds (Elizabeth Taylor) is raising her out-of-wedlock teenage son Danny (Morgan Mason) and wants to educate him herself. Child welfare authorities demand that Danny be sent to school, and Laura sends him to a private institution run by Episcopalian priest Dr. Edward Hewitt (Richard Burton). Now, a love triangle between pious Dr. Hewitt, his wife Claire (Eva Marie Saint), and Laura ensues, which leads to Hewitt quitting his job and renewing his faith. A Best Song Academy Award was received for "The Shadow of Your Smile."
