Ohio housewife Cathy Palmer (JoBeth Williams) wins a trip to Paris after writing a chapter for a book in a mystery writing contest. Cathy arrives in Paris and is hit in the head when knocked down by a car in an accident. Upon awakening in the hospital, Cathy has no memory of her past life and believes that she is the James Bond-type heroine, Rebecca Ryan, the spy she wrote about in the contest. She meets Alan McMann (Tom Conti) and does not know that he is the ghost writer of the novel for which she won the prize.
