During World War II, Major Reisman (Lee Marvin) is assigned by General Worden (Ernest Borgnine) to train 12 convicts to go behind enemy lines on a special mission for the Allied Forces. The convicts have either been sentenced to death or life imprisonment and include sexual pervert Archer Maggott (Telly Savalas), psychotic Victor Franko (John Cassavetes), and lame-brained killer Vernon Pinkley (Donald Sutherland). Reisman must train them how to perform as a unit when they dress in Nazi uniforms and overtake a French chateau occupied by German officers. Filled with suspense along with comedy to lighten the mood.
