The romance and marriage of singer Bobby Darin and actress Sandra Dee is the subject of this Kevin Spacey biopic in which Spacey does a good job of recreating Darin's vocal style. The story begins when seven-year-old Bobby (William Ulrich)–who is being raised in the home of his mother Polly (Brenda Blethyn), his sister Nina (Caroline Aaron), and Nina's husband Charlie (Bob Hoskins)–gets rheumatic fever, but, with their care, he survives. Later, Bobby (Spacey) works his way up in the entertainment world and becomes a star. He meets Sandra Dee (Kate Bosworth), and, despite her mother Mary's (Greta Scacchi) objections, they marry. All goes well–until conflicts of Sandra's acting career and Bobby's touring cause strains on their relationship.

This screen adaptation of Jay Parini's novel relates the final days of an ailing Leo Tolstoy (Christopher Plummer). Leo and his wife Sofya (Helen Mirren) are living on their estate when Valentin Bulgakov (James McAvoy) arrives to take his position as Leo's secretary. Although Sofya disagrees, Leo and his long-time friend Vladimir Chertkov (Paul Giamatti) believe that the profits from his famous novels "War and Peace" and "Anna Karenina" belong to the Tolstoyans who spread his beliefs in Christianity and pacifism–not to his family. Vladimir has arranged for Valentin to spy on Sofya and provide him with the information he needs to convince Leo to change his will. Academy Award nominations were received for Best Actress (Mirren) and Supporting Actor (Plummer).
