  While riding on a freight train, teenager Doyle Kennedy (Matt Dillon) encounters teenage drifter Wade Corey (Andrew McCarthy) and charms him into returning to his town in Kansas. Soon after, they perform a bank robbery but are separated, and Wade hides the loot. While hiding out, Wade rescues the governor's (Harry Northup) young daughter and becomes a celebrity hero. He then finds work on a farm and falls in love with Lori (Leslie Hope). But even though he is enjoying his new life, Wade worries that Doyle will come looking for him–and the money.
