Young Renee (Jane Fonda) lives a life of leisure in the mansion of her older, rich husband, Alexandre (Michel Piccoli). When Alexandre finds out about the affair, he arranges a marriage between Maxime and another man while ensuring that Renee is cut out of his estate. Based on an Emile Zola novel. Fonda was Vadim's wife at the time.
