Rae is engaged to marry Curt (Richard Carlson), and Walter has married another woman. Their love has lasted over the years, and Rae agrees to be Walter's mistress–an affair that will last for many years.

He left as a struggling inventor when Isabel Amberson (Dolores Costello) turned down his marriage proposal to marry the "more acceptable" Wilbur Minafer (Don Dillaway). Eugene is now a widower with a daughter Lucy (Anne Baxter) and the successful inventor of an automobile. Isabel has been widowed, and Eugene again pursues her. But her son George (Tim Holt) and Aunt Fanny Amberson (Agnes Moorehead) interfere, and their actions bring on tragedy for the family when they do not accept progress in the changing world of the automobile age. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Supporting Actress (Agnes Moorehead).

A good story that is based (loosely) on a Zane Grey novel–not "Thunder Mountain," but "To the Last Man."
