Preteen Greg Heffley (Zachary Gordon) attends middle school and encounters many problems. His parents, Frank and Susan (Steve Zahn and Rachael Harris), are mostly clueless about Greg's problems at school, and he ignores the advice of his teenage brother Rodrick (Devon Bostick). Greg's solution is to concoct schemes to achieve popularity, but they all fail. Meanwhile, Greg puts all of his experiences into his diary, and his illustrations are animated in the film. Although his classmates consider Greg to be a dork, Greg believes that one day he will be able to laugh at his middle school problems.

When orphaned Andi (Emma Roberts) and her brother Bruce (Jake T. Austin) move into the home of their new foster parents (Kevin Dillon and Lisa Kudrow), they must give up their dog, Friday. They know that they cannot live without Friday and place Friday in an abandoned hotel that they turn into a shelter for stray animals. This works for awhile–until their caseworker Bernie (Don Cheadle) finds another home for Andi and Bruce. Their trespassing is discovered, and the dogs are impounded.
