  According to the Mayan calendar, Earth will come to an end on December 21, 2012. Scientist Adrian Helmsley (Chiwetel Ejiofor) warns U.S. President Wilson (Danny Glover) that the end of the world is coming. The date arrives, and catastrophes ensue. An earthquake causes Los Angeles to erupt, Las Vegas is demolished, and a volcano destroys Yellowstone National Park. Those disasters are combined with more devastation taking place all over Earth. Meanwhile, Jackson Curtis' (John Cusack) plans to connect with his children at Yellowstone include a harrowing plane ride to Yellowstone where he meets crazy Charlie (Woody Harrelson) who has a map leading to space arks hidden by the government for use if the Mayan prediction proves true.

As a result, Plame lost her job, and her marriage suffered. Now, years later, she wages a war to clear her name and save her marriage.

  This story, which is built around the battle of Iwo Jima, cuts back and forth between the actual battle and the three surviving soldiers–John "Doc" Bradley (Ryan Phillippe), Rene Gagnon (Jesse Bradford), and Ira Hayes (Adam Beach)–of six who raised the flag depicted in the powerful picture taken by Joe Rosenthal (Ned Eisenberg). Rosenthal's picture was used to raise the spirits of a war-worn American public, and the soldiers were sent on a tour to sell war bonds. The story begins in the present when Bradley's son, James (Thomas McCarthy), interviews Rosenthal trying to get information on how the soldiers coped with the attention received from his photograph. Superb directing by Clint Eastwood. An Oscar was received for Best Sound Editing.

  Sixty-two-year-old, Connecticut economics Professor Walter Vale (Richard Jenkins) has lost his purpose in life. They had rented the apartment from a con man who knew that Walter was not living there. Walter allows them to stay, and that decision opens up a new world for him. Tarek teaches Walter how to play the African drum, and Walter is delighted to discover the world of jazz. When Tarek is arrested as an illegal immigrant, Walter comes to his aid. Tarek's mother Mouna (Hiam Abbass) arrives in the city looking for her son, and romance also enters Walter's world. Cultural differences have fallen by the wayside. Jenkins received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.
