According to the Mayan calendar, Earth will come to an end on December 21, 2012. Rosenthal's picture was used to raise the spirits of a war-worn American public, and the soldiers were sent on a tour to sell war bonds. The story begins in the present when Bradley's son, James (Thomas McCarthy), interviews Rosenthal trying to get information on how the soldiers coped with the attention received from his photograph. Superb directing by Clint Eastwood. An Oscar was received for Best Sound Editing.
