"The Shadow" is a mysterious outlaw whose gang has been victimizing the local ranchers when U.S. Marshal John Travers (John Wayne) rides into town. After the sheriff (Thomas G. Lingham) is killed, Travers volunteers to take his job and, with help from his Indian pal Yak (Yakima Canutt), begins to investigate "The Shadow." He identifies "The Shadow" as Matt Matlock (George "Gabby" Hayes), a man who has assumed the identity of the real Matt Matlock after killing him. Matlock's niece, Anita (Verna Hillie), is visiting him and has no idea that the "uncle" she is visiting is really an imposter. Travers captures "The Shadow's" gang and rescues Anita. Now, Anita and Travis fall in love, marry, and live happily ever after on the Matlock ranch with Yak by their side.
