  After their son is killed in an automobile accident on his eighth birthday, Paul (Greg Kinnear) and Jessie (Rebecca Romijn) meet with genetic researcher Richard Wells (Robert De Niro) who offers to clone their son. Since cloning is illegal, Paul and Jessie must sever ties with the past as they set out to raise their cloned son. The first eight years are fine; however, as that eighth birthday approaches warning signs mount.
