Christine (Jill Schoelen) auditions for a Broadway show and discovers a piece of music written by obscure composer Erik (Robert Englund). When Christine sings Erik's song, she is taken back to 1881 in London. Many years before, Erik had made a pact with the devil in exchange for writing popular songs. The devil horribly scarred Erik's face forever, but Erik lives beneath the London Opera House where he writes his music. When Erik meets Christine, he falls in love with her, coaches her, and she becomes an opera star. Christine enjoys her success and her romance with Erik–until she realizes that Erik is committing grisly murders in his attempt to assure Christine success in the musical world.

But, when Christine falls in love with the arrogant Count De Chagny (Adam Storke), Erik seeks vengeance as the masked Phantom.

This classic story is brought to TV with several deviations from the original story–a major one being that it is set in Budapest rather than Paris. After orchestra leader Sandor's (Maximilian Schell) singer wife (Jane Seymour) receives a bad review and commits suicide, Sandor gets into a fight with the critic (Philip Stone) and is burned with acid. Sandor takes refuge beneath the opera house, and five years later emerges as the masked Phantom. He falls in love with chorus girl Maria Gianelli (also played by Seymour) who greatly resembles his dead wife. Maria is in love with the director of the opera, Michael Hartnell (Michael York), but the Phantom tutors Maria and terrorizes the cast and all those who stand in the way of Maria's stardom. Good cast and scenery.

He lives in the sewer beneath the opera house and kidnaps opera star Christine (Heather Sears), who he loves, so that he can train her to perform his opera. Now, Christine's fiance Harry Hunter (Edward DeSouza) searches for Christine, and, when he finds her, it is Harry who unmasks the Phantom.

This remake of the 1925 movie is the first talkie version of this story. Claude Rains does a good job as the masked Phantom who comes up from the sewers under the Paris Opera House to coach singer Christine (Susanna Foster). He terrorizes the singers and even drugs and strangles the lead singer (Jane Farrar) to ensure that Christine will be given the lead. When Christine fails to appear on the stage, the Phantom causes a giant chandelier to crash on the audience. Now, the Phantom kidnaps Christine who does manage to remove his mask. More terror ensues during the dark chase beneath the opera house to rescue Christine.

This is a very good, silent horror film with Lon Chaney at his best in the role of Erik, the Phantom, who lives in the sewers beneath the Paris Opera House and comes up to coach beautiful singer Christine (Mary Philbin). Through a series of terrors, including causing an enormous chandelier to crash on the audience, the Phantom forces the lead soprano to resign from the opera. Then, he lures Christine into his lair beneath the opera house and tells her that he loves her but that he will only let her go if she will break off her relationship with Raoul de Chagny (Norman Kerry). Christine agrees but then rushes to Raoul, and they plan to run away after the performance. The Phantom overhears her and kidnaps Christine asking only that she never remove his mask, but she sneaks up behind him, rips off the mask, and reveals the terror of what lies beneath. Now, it is the job of Raoul and secret service agent Simon Buquet (Gibson Gowland) to rescue Christine.
