Nineteen-year-old farm boy Roy Hobbs (Paul Sullivan Jr.) arrives on the baseball scene with his homemade bat "Wonderboy." He is ready to try out for the Chicago Cubs when his dreams hit a snag. A mysterious woman, Harriet Bird (Barbara Hershey), shoots him with a silver bullet forcing Roy to drop out of baseball. Now, 15 years later, Roy (Robert Redford) is back in baseball as a 35-year-old rookie with the New York Knights where he becomes the star player attracting fans AND women, including sultry siren Memo Paris (Kim Basinger) and his high-school girlfriend Iris Gaines (Glenn Close). It is an old-fashioned story of good triumphing over evil. The climax of Roy's home-run hit is a classic. The film received four Oscar nominations, including Glenn Close for Best Supporting Actress.
