  Young Colin Smith (Tom Courtenay) is in reform school after joining his friend Mike (James Bolam) and stealing from a baker's shop. Colin's life seems to be going nowhere until the school's Governor (Michael Redgrave) convinces him to enter a race between students in the reform school and the pupils at the local public school. Now, Colin must balance his desire to win with his frustrations in what he believes is a less than praiseworthy system.
