John Wayne moves out of the World War II genre and plays Col. Mike Kirby who leads his special forces Green Berets in the Viet Nam War. Liberal war correspondent George Beckworth (David Janssen) accompanies Col. Kirby and his troops and, as time passes, begins to understand more about the conflict and even joins in the fighting. One of the missions they accomplish is to courageously go behind enemy lines to kidnap a Viet Cong general. This film features the song, "Ballad of the Green Berets," sung by Sgt.
