  During the Civil War, Val McBride (Stuart Hamblen) and his gang of Confederate sympathizers are terrorizing citizens in Missouri. Army scouts The Arizona Kid (Roy Rogers) and "Gabby" Whittacre (George "Gabby" Hayes) arrive on the scene, and Roy learns that his boyhood friend Dave (David Kerwin) plans to join McBride's marauders. Despite Roy's advice, Dave joins the gang, and when Roy does capture them, he must order Dave's execution.

John takes Zanti prisoner after Zanti tries and fails to kidnap Dusty's granddaughter Ruby (Sheila Terry), but Marshal Walton (Jack Rockwell) believes that John is an outlaw. Meanwhile, Dusty is hiding in a mine where Zanti is shackled, but Zanti escapes. Now, John tracks Zanti into the desert where Zanti drinks poisoned water and dies. By story's end, John captures the other gang members, becomes the new marshal, and marries Ruby.

Jerry is charged with the murder, but Jerry has already rescued Jake who was left for dead and makes plans to trap the assayers during his trial.

Randy finds the killers hiding in a cave with their leader Marvin Black (George "Gabby" Hayes) who poses as Peyote Pass shop-keeper Matt the Mute while plotting to take control of the town. Randy joins the gang members as part of his plan to bring them to justice.

  John Brant (John Wayne) is arrested for murder, but he is innocent. He does not stay in jail for long because he finds that it is necessary to break out to clear his name. While searching for the real killer, Brant takes the alias of "John Smith" and teams up with outlaw Joseph Conlon (Lane Chandler) who has taken the alias of "Bob Jones." Unbeknownst to Brant, his new partner is the killer he is searching for. To make matters worse, both men fall for beautiful Sally Blake (Nancy Shubert). The story continues through a series of events until Brant finally figures out that "Bob Jones" is the real killer.

  Gene Autry sings his way along while his sidekick Frog Millhouse (Smiley Burnette) joins him on the trail of Grandpa Martin's killer. Martin had found a gold mine, and his horse can lead them to it. As her way of watching their every step, Martin's granddaughter, Joan Martin (Barbara Pepper), hires Gene and Frog to provide music for a dance at the Martin ranch. The horse is stabled in the barn, and it is hoped that the killer will spot it.

Later, John meets Dan's sister Beth (Lucile Browne) who, not knowing of the role he may have played in her brother's death, hires John as her ranch foreman. Stagecoach robber Joe Dickson (LeRoy Mason) tells Beth about John's past, and, later, John learns that Joe is the one responsible for Dan's death. John calls together a tribe of Indians to track down Joe, and, no longer feeling guilty, John is now free to fall in love with Beth.
