When the deal fails, Bradley hires Lobo Joe (Roger Gray) and his gang instead, but Lobo and his gang rob both Bradley and Morgan. Meanwhile, Dog Town falls for Marion (Beth Marion) and later reveals that he is a Texas Ranger in disguise. He straightens things out, arrests the guilty culprits, and promises Marion that he will return.

  "The Shadow" is a mysterious outlaw whose gang has been victimizing the local ranchers when U.S. Marshal John Travers (John Wayne) rides into town. After the sheriff (Thomas G. Lingham) is killed, Travers volunteers to take his job and, with help from his Indian pal Yak (Yakima Canutt), begins to investigate "The Shadow." He identifies "The Shadow" as Matt Matlock (George "Gabby" Hayes), a man who has assumed the identity of the real Matt Matlock after killing him. Matlock's niece, Anita (Verna Hillie), is visiting him and has no idea that the "uncle" she is visiting is really an imposter. Travers captures "The Shadow's" gang and rescues Anita. Now, Anita and Travis fall in love, marry, and live happily ever after on the Matlock ranch with Yak by their side.

  Sheriff John Higgins (John Wayne) thinks that he has killed his good friend, Dan Matthews (Frank Ball), during an outlaw gang shootout and turns over his badge to Ed Williams (George "Gabby" Hayes). Later, John meets Dan's sister Beth (Lucile Browne) who, not knowing of the role he may have played in her brother's death, hires John as her ranch foreman. Stagecoach robber Joe Dickson (LeRoy Mason) tells Beth about John's past, and, later, John learns that Joe is the one responsible for Dan's death. John calls together a tribe of Indians to track down Joe, and, no longer feeling guilty, John is now free to fall in love with Beth.

  While traveling on a train, Rod Drew (John Wayne) meets his old friend, card shark Wabi (Noah Beery Jr.), who has been framed for murder. Rod helps Wabi escape, and they end up at Wabinosh General Store where Rod meets and falls in love with the owner's (Noah Beery) daughter Felice (Verna Hillie). Rod and Wabi hear about a map leading to a gold mine and track down the map but find the owner dead. In the dead man's cabin is a portrait of his daughter who they identify as Felice. After more than a few problems, Rod and Wabi capture the villains and deliver them to the police, and, by story's end, Rod rides off into the sunset with Felice.

But, again, Tex is there when needed.
