Sgt. Brandon King (Ryan Phillippe) and his squad fight the war in Iraq, and now Brandon and his hometown group–Sgt. Steve Shriver (Channing Tatum), PFC Tommy Burgess (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), and Isaac "Eyeball" Butler (Rob Brown)–are returning to Brazos, Texas. But, they do not leave the war behind and have problems settling back into the civilian world. It is time for Brandon to be discharged when he learns that he has been reenlisted as part of the "stop-loss" program to protect national security. Brandon does not want to return to war and, instead, goes AWOL. With Steve's girlfriend Michelle (Abbie Cornish) at the wheel, Brandon and Michelle set out for Washington, D.C., so that Brandon can make a plea to Senator Orton Worrell (Josef Sommer). Along the way, Brandon makes his choice between duty to country and his own sanity.
