The Love Guru   2008     1 star    PG-13, 87 min.
Genre: Comedy
Director: Marco Schnabel
Cast: Mike Myers, Jessica Alba, Justin Timberlake, Romany Malco, Verne Troyer, Meagan Good, Manu Narayan, John Oliver, Stephen Colbert, Jim Gaffigan, Ben Kingsley, Omid Djalili, Telma Hopkins, Jessica Simpson, Deepak Chopra

As a boy, Pitka (Mike Myers) had lived with his missionary parents in India but was orphaned and left to be raised by Guru Tugginmypuddah (Ben Kingsley) to become a self-help guru. Of course, the only reason Guru Pitka wanted to become a guru was to meet girls–a fact that provoked Guru Tugginmypuddah to slap a chastity belt on him. Now, Pitka's greatest ambition is to appear on the Oprah show, and he finds the chance when a call comes from Jane Bullard (Jessica Alba), the owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs hockey team. It seems that their star player Darren Roanoke (Romany Malco) had been cheating on his wife Prudence (Meagan Good), and she has left him for the King's goalie Jacques "Le Coq" Grande (Justin Timberlake). Obviously, this has had an effect on the team, but if Guru Pitka can help Darren win back Prudence, the Maple Leafs may just find the chance to win the Stanley Cup. Even more important to Guru Pitka, he will probably get his chance to appear on the Oprah show after accomplishing his task.

Trancers   1985     2 stars    PG-13, 85 min.
Genre: Sci-Fi
aka: Future Cop

Director: Charles Band
Cast: Tim Thomerson, Helen Hunt, Michael Stefani, Art LaFleur, Telma Hopkins, Richard Herd, Anne Seymour, Miguel Fernandez, Biff Manard, Peter Schrum

There's trouble in Angel City (formerly Los Angeles) in the year 2247. Jack Deth (Tim Thomerson) thought that he had taken care of "The Whistler" (Michael Stefani), who can call up his zombie-like Trancers. Then Jack finds out that Whistler has gone back to 1985 L.A. to get rid of the ancestors of the city's council. Jack goes back to stop that nonsense. Yes–the movie's cheap price tag shows, but it is fun. There are four sequels.

Trancers II   1991     1 star    R, 87 min.
Genre: Sci-Fi
Director: Charles Band
Cast: Tim Thomerson, Helen Hunt, Megan Ward, Biff Manard, Martine Beswick, Jeffrey Combs, Alyson Croft, Telma Hopkins, Art LaFleur, Barbara Crampton

OK–the original, though cheap, was fun. But this one can't get away with the low production values (as they say) without comment. Jack (Tim Thomerson) got stuck in the past (now, 1991) after dealing with the Trancer problem in 1985. He is married to Lena (Helen Hunt) and another Trancer threat emerges, led by Whistler's (from the original) brother. To help Jack out, the 23rd-century council sends his wife back from the future. And you think he had problems before.

Trancers III: Deth Lives   1992     2 stars    R, 83 min.
Genre: Sci-Fi
Director: C. Courtney Joyner
Cast: Tim Thomerson, Melanie Smith, Andrew Robinson, Tony Pierce, Ed Beechner, Helen Hunt, Megan Ward, Stephen Macht, Telma Hopkins, R.A. Mihailoff

The series takes a slight turn for the better after the poor #2. Jack (Tim Thomerson) is yanked to his own time (2252) due to a new Trancer threat. It is determined that this strain can be traced back to 2005, so off he goes. Along with an escapee from the Trancer training program (Melanie Smith), he sets about saving the world (again). Two more of these sequels to go.
