  Ralph "Papa" Thorson (Steve McQueen) is a bounty hunter who searches for bail jumpers. The story involves his bringing criminals to jail and his relationship with his pregnant wife Dotty (Kathryn Harrold). While on the trail of fugitives in Illinois, Nebraska, and Texas, Thorson himself is pursued by a psychotic killer seeking revenge after Thorson apprehended him. This was Steve McQueen's last movie.

Mattie has learned that she has incurable cancer, and son Jeff (Glynn Turman) returns home with news that he was kicked out of the Air Force Officer's School. Unable to deal with the problems, Johnny goes on a drinking spree and becomes an alcoholic. Will this family be able to adjust and find their place in the world?
