This historical drama is based on the story of fictional 110-year-old ex-slave Jane Pittman (Cicely Tyson) who reminisces about her experiences from the American Civil War until the 1960s' Civil Rights Movement. Shown through flashbacks, the story begins when the Civil War ends, and young Jane escapes from the KKK. As a newly freed woman, she fights to overcome adversity–even enduring the murder of her husband by racists in the North. Finally, she takes a positive position in the Civil Rights Movement. This television movie won nine Emmy Awards, including Best Actress (Tyson), Director, and Screenplay.
