Paranoid Park is the name of a skateboard park in Portland where teenage "hardcore freaks" go to skate. Alex (Gabe Nevins) is trying to deal with the divorce of his parents (Grace Carter and Jay Williamson) as well as problems with his girlfriend Jennifer (Taylor Momsen) when he heads off to Paranoid Park. While there, he hops a train and accidentally causes the death of a security guard (John Michael Burrowes). Detective Richard Liu (Dan Liu) investigates and interviews Alex who says he knows nothing because the tragic event is buried deep within his mind. Now, Alex starts to express himself by writing in his diary in order to sort out his confusing memories that resulted when he sought to escape realities in his life.

An ordinary beagle (voice of Jason Lee) gets a dose of mad scientist Simon Barsinister's (Peter Dinklage) potion, escapes the lab, and then is taken in by widower Don Unger (James Belushi) and his depressed son Jack (Alex Neuberger) who name him Shoeshine because he likes to lick shoes. Shoeshine adjusts happily to his new home, but Barsinister's potion has turned him into a dog with super powers. When Dan encourages him to use those powers for a worthy cause, Shoeshine dons a suit and cape and turns into Underdog vowing to protect the citizens of Capitol City–including, of course, that particular spaniel Polly Purebread (voice of Amy Adams). "There is no need to fear! Underdog is here!"
